It’s not you, it’s them. Facebook and Instagram experienced issues across the globe yesterday, with both websites and the apps being intermittently down, and some features not functioning for many users. The outage affected users in the US, Europe, South America, Australia, and Asia, for more than eight hours – by some reports, the longest since 2008 when Facebook had a mere 150 million users.
So, what does one do when the most popular social media network in the world crashes? Spoiler: Research shows we don’t get off.
Log In To Twitter
Of course! Users immediately dusted off their Twitter account password, logged in and quickly started posting memes reacting to the outage. To be exact, within one hour the hashtags #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown had been used 150,000 times.
Read the News
What a concept. Seconds after the platform malfunctioned, users clicked over to news outlets. In an analysis of more than 4,000 publishers’ sites, direct traffic increased 11 percent during Facebook’s lapse, while traffic to news mobile apps ballooned 22 percent.
Come again? Telegram is a cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging app with a focus on security and speed. The Telegram app saw three million new users within the last 24 hours.
Play Online Games
There is a little kid in all of us, right? Affected users moved their energy from feed scrolling to strategic action gaming. Fortnite, the most popular video game in the world, also saw an increase in active users during the outage.
Bombard Law Enforcement
We’ve all been known to overexaggerate a time or two but this is not the time to call 9-1-1. Your community law enforcement is focusing on bigger issues — like protecting your community. Please don’t call them (or tweet them) with this so-called ‘emergency.’
Luckily, we survived and while none of us wish for an outage like this, there are plenty of things social media monitors can do. So next time, don’t fret. Get a headstart and begin creating the next months content calendar. Edit those photos you’ve been meaning to get to. Or, do like us and write about it!
We’ll be right there with you.
